Prokaryote

Organism with no cell nucleus

more information

Only unicellular organisms can be prokaryotes. The word comes from the Greek ‘pro’ (before) and ‘karyos’ (kernel). So prokaryotes do not have cell nuclei. Multicellular organisms, such as animals and plants, always have cell nuclei.

Three domains

All organisms on earth can be divided into three domains. The bacteria and archaea together make up the prokaryotes. The eukaryotes, organisms with cell nuclei, make up the third domain.
