new exhibit: gladiators of the greenhouse

– Sept. 3, 2015

Micropia presented its exhibit of a new practical application of microbes this morning, in association with its partner BASF. The exhibit gladiators of the greenhouse shows how microscopically small insect hunters are being used to protect organic crops.

natural adversaries of plague insects

The nematode (Steinernema feltiae) can be seen in action in the new exhibit. This microscopically small roundworm is a natural adversary of plague insects such as the Californian thrips (Frankliniella occidentalis), which are also known as midges. These insects are frequently found in ornamental horticulture and are very difficult to control.

insects cause billions of euros’ damage

Plagues of insects inflict many billions of euros’ damage to greenhouse horticulture every year by harming the quality of the plants and causing poor harvests. By deploying natural enemies, the financial damage can be greatly reduced. Using natural enemies has now become a standard method in insect control. BASF advises the Dutch agricultural sector in this field and provides support through innovative and sustainable products and solutions in order to expand the use of natural remedies.

revealing the importance of this new application

Micropia and BASF have designed a new exhibit to show this new application and its importance to the general public. Visitors can use specially designed 3D viewers for an interactive view of these nematodes living and moving.

Starting today, visitors can see the nematodes in action in the exhibit on the ground floor of Micropia, which offers space to show new applications to the public. Plan your visit .
