Magnetic stirrer

Stirring with a magnet

more information

A magnetic stirrer is a standard component of every lab. With this device, as the name says, one mixes solutions with a magnet.

Stir bar

With the use of a magnetic field, a magnetic stirrer rotates a stir bar. The rod-shaped magnet is placed in a beaker or bottle containing liquids. By rotating the stir bar, the liquid is properly mixed. A magnetic stirrer can, among other things, be used to prepare medium to culture microbes

Magnetic field

There are two ways in which a magnetic field can be created. The first is by an internally rotating magnet inside the magnetic stirrer. Alternatively a electromagnet can be used. Sometimes a magnetic stirrer also has heating function. By heating a mixture it can help to dissolve particles faster and better.
